For seven years the Kestrel Art Gallery displayed over 200 works by artists from all over Asia and Australia. Although the Internet's popularity was soaring, many artists were kept away by the considerable expense of web hosting, purchasing a domain name from Network Solutions and buying digital camera hardware. At that time, these were well beyond the reach of most people. When the Gallery opened in 1997, its eight founding artists from Australia had a chance to show their wares to the world. We got a nice write up in the national press. The gallery expanded over the ensuing years displaying art from all over Asia, including a strong collection from China and India. But eventually the decreasing cost of web hosting and hardware allowed artists to create their own web sites. A web site needs to know when its time is over, and exit gracefully. That time would be now.
